GONG April Report on Hate Speech: Rehabilitation of Ustasha period is still going on

31.05.2016.

Process of rehabilitation of Ustasha regime by talking about it at the same level as about anti-fascism started strongly in April, shows GONG Report on monitoring hate speech, discriminatory speech, stereotypes and agitated speech in news media.

Rehabilitation is not connected exclusively with the date of constitution of the Independent Croatian State (April 10, 1941), but with affirmation of historical revisionism and denial of characteristics of the period in general, is stated in the Report.

Governmental reaction to that were rather weak, hardly to be noticed and did not clearly condemn rehabilitation of nazi-fascist NDH regime; it was always done mentioning that government is against “every totalitarianism”.

It is mention in the Report that USA State Department special commissioner for Holocaust visited Croatia at the same time with delegation of the World Jewish Organization.

These visits resulted, as stated in the Report, in condemning the Ustasha regime by state institutions, so in following days about that regime as maleficent much more explicitly talked the Croatian President and the Prime Minister.

“On the other hand, in the administration and between pro-governmental media, especially after these visits, denial of any possible rehabilitation of that period was on. They even insisted that these information were actually malicious insinuations. At the same time some schools were visited by marko perković Thompson with his hit song “Čavoglave battalion”, including the “Za dom spremni” salute (used by NDH Army) in Rome settlement there were unexplained explosions and fires and atmosphere for activists and journalists was still threatening”, is said in the April GONG Report.

The 6th GONG media monitoring covered period from April 1 – 30, 2016 and was aimed to identify actors and media publishing discriminatory and stereotyped declarations and articles as well as to find out how are they treated in media.

As examples 4 dailies, 7 weeklies, 2 central news TV shows, 4 TV panels/talk shows, 1 radio live show and 7 portals were monitored.Content of monitored media was analysed using criteria of so called “point of view”, that is of topics understanding values regarding important part in Croatian public discurs and media: migration crisis, migrations in Europe, LGBTIQ human rights, gender and participation in politics, identity and minority rights in Croatia and rehabilitation of the Ustasha regime.
