By extending term to Siniša Kovačić as acting HRT general manager the Government knowingly opens the door to agony of public media broadcaster

31.08.2016.

By today's decision about extending term to Siniša Kovačić as acting HRT general manager still technical Croatian Government ignored HRT Supervising Board opinion, public debate objections and CJA disagreement as well as alarms that came from international journalists organizations, organizations monitoring freedom of expression and EBU (European Broadcaster Union), whose member is even HRT.

Even the very decision is a contradiction as the Government today passed the Regulation on Law on HRT adjustment defining that acting term for general manager would be extended to one year instead six months as it used to be. But the same Regulation explicitly said that present acting HRT general manager term was to be expanded until October 1 this year. And  that is just about a month longer than six months (term to be expired September 4), as decided by Croatian Parliament when appointing present acting general manager.

We want to remind you that CJA publicly reacted to the intention of extending term to HRT acting general manager Siniša Kovačić because we found that the Government since day one treated HRT as its spoils of war. Since then HRT has become instrument of rigid cultural revolution and Siniša Kovačić has been fulfilling new political demands without any questions.

We alarmed the public that it was just a move to preserve current situation at HRT until parliamentary elections; and even longer to make damage done to program and human resources even bigger. We find it to be shameless violation of political power at the Croatian citizens’ expense.

By extending term to Siniša Kovačić as acting HRT general manager the Government knowingly opened the door to agony of public media broadcaster.
