CJA: We condemn threat against journalist Domagoj Margetić

07.07.2017.

Croatian Journalists' Association (CJA) strongly condemns threat by physical violence against Domagoj Margetić while he was covering eviction in Zagreb. Domagoj Margetić was threatened by a person who was identified as court distraining officer.

According to Domagoj Margetić, a male person, hired by Zagreb Municipal Court, threatened him. He ordered him leave the scene or he would be knocked down because he was taking pictures. The whole incident is clearly heard at the video Margetić took and placed at his Facebook post.

Margetić asked CJA to protect him and said he was covering eviction to the benefit of Austrian BKS Bank at 10 o'clock, June 5, at address Gračani, Gjurkov put 32. He was taking photos and video outside the area of eviction with clearly showing his press card and without any comments or communication with parties involved in the process of evicting. He said several witnesses could confirm his statement.

„While shooting the Zagreb Municipal Court official, who at the time had not identify himself, nor had he shown any official document, had come and banned the shooting. As I told him I had a permit to shoot from the land I was standing at, he told me go get lost or he would knock me down“, said Margetić.

„That person”, Robert Berend, court distraining officer, claimed Margetić „repeated his threats shouting he could not stand journalists“, added Margetić. After the incident Margetić left the scene.

Domagoj Margetić, journalist who was openly threatened several times anonymously and who was victim of attempted murder several years ago, reported the incident to the local Police Station.

CJA calls upon the Police to bring in for interrogation the person who threatened our colleague and institute criminal proceedings against him.

We insist on warning the public and all relevant institutions that threats and attacks against journalists are attacks against media freedom, democracy and Constitution of the Republic of Croatia.
