We insist for the Croatian Parliament to discuss threats against journalists

24.10.2016.

Croatian Journalists' Association (CJA) is deeply concerned with the fact that no case of threats against journalists in Croatia has been brought to justice and that number of offences, hate speech included, has even increased.

The latest cases were threatening letter addressed to MS Branka Gabriela Valentić, head of HINA (Croatian News Agency) and Goran Borković, editor in chief of Forum.tm portal. One was signed by „One HOS (Croatian Defense Forces) member and the other one by „Ustasha snakes“. Both letter had the same Ustasha salutation „Za dom spremni“.

The letters included, along with many threats addressed to recipients, even hateful threats against some journalists and public figures.

CJA gives notice once again that there is just little step between threat and physical violence and urge the relevant institutions to act promptly in all cases of threats against journalists. We call for Croatian Parliament Committee for information, informatization and media to discuss that situation that we find very dangerous for the society in general at its first session.

We also expect PMs to respond to that important topic at their plenary session.
