Non-profit media submitted requests to the Government aimed to stop deterioration of media and democratic standards

06.07.2016.

Non-profit media, grouped in the Emancipation Network, sent from its conference „Stabilization and development of nonprofit media in Croatia“ 7 requests to the Croatian Government aiming to stop additional deterioration of media and democratic standards The priority is, as it is pointed out, to resume work on media strategy.

Beside completing media strategy, it has been insisted on public funding of non-profit media through institutional subsidies/grants in transparent bidding procedure based on 2,5% of total Croatian Lottery funds; means are to be allocated to independent position marked as „non-profit media”.

Growth of percentage for funding non-profit media through Pluralism and Diversity of Electronic Media Fund up to 20%, urgent implementation of Community Media Program, as well as encouraging creating public media at local and regional level have also been requested.

It has further been requested urgent adoption of decision about assigning part of available radio and TV frequencies to non-profit publishers, as well as additional recruiting in the Ministry of Culture by persons professionally qualified for media and media policy. It has been suggested to establish one media fund with different lines of state financial support that would „finance media and journalism in the part they comply public interest“.

In discussion about possibilities for stabilization and development of non-profit media in Croatia following participants took part: Sandra Bartolović, Forum.tm journalist, Davorka Blažević, Tris-portal editor in chief, Šibenik, Peđa Grbin and Milan Živković, Socialdemocratic Party members, Milorad Pupovac, vice-president of SDSS (Social Democratic Serb Party) and Goran Beus Richembergh, member of HNS (Croatian People's Party). Although he has been announced, Jasen Mesić, HDZ (Croatian Democratic Union) member, has not presented himself as a speaker.
